La Pittura
La Pittura by Artemisia Gentileschi, a prominent female artist in the Baroque period, is a representation on the still oppressing climate for women. The painting is a self-portrait of the artist. Although she is painting within the painting, she's not wearing an artist's garb. This is important because when an artist was painting they wore a smock type thing and a cap. Artemisia was a woman, however, therefore it wasn't proper for her to wear such clothing. The artist was also a rape victim, and through her art she protested the wrongful abuse of women.
The Burial of Count Orgaz
Mannerist art reached its height with the painter El Greco, also known as Domenikos Theotokopoulos. The painting depicts the famed burial of Count Orgaz who supposedly had two Catholic Saints appear at his funeral. In Spain, where this was painted, the Catholic church was still strong. The counter-reformation used this type of art to enthrall the people towards Catholicism.
The Ecstasy of Saint Theresa
The sculpture/painter/architect Bernini sculpted this masterpeice. The style is Baroque meaning it uses the same type of sculpting that the Rennaissance used, but with more passion. This work was suppose to inspire the viewer to religious enlightenment and return them to the Catholic fold.
Ascension
This Northern Baroque piece by Rembrandt, a Flemish man, is an excellent example of Reformist art. Although, art was outlawed in protestent society artists found ways of loopholing this new social standard. Rembrandt is possibly the greatest etcher of all time. He is one of the most prominent artists of the period. His artwork reflects many of the values of the protestent people.
Entombment
Carravaggio is a master at Baroque painting. Artemesia Gentilischi based her style off of Carravaggio. His stark light and dark adds emotion to a scene that has been painted for hundreds of years at this point. His style draws the viewer to the greif of the people surrounding Christ, or how you would feel if you saw a dead loved one. Also, his way of painting the scene makes you feel that you're a part of it.
