The Rise of Lutheranism: Over time, Luther's strong views on religion became more strongly supported than the Catholic Church. Pope Leo X was trying to raise money to rebuild a church on Rome until he came up with indulgence. Indulgences were issued by the church this
would conclude with the punishment of sin being canceled. Martin preached against
indulgences and other church teachings he believed were corrupt. In 1517 Martin
nailed the Ninety-five Theses on the door of the Wittenberg Church. In the 95
theses he criticizing indulgences and other policies he opposed. This news would
spread quickly threw out Germany. This would conclude the rapid fall of the sales
of indulgences. Martin published more essays about the justification of faith and
speaking against the church. PopeLeo X sent envoysto Germany to try to get
Martin to take back his criticisms. Martin refused. In 1520, the Pope banned Martin's teachings.
In 1521, Pope LeoX excommunicated Martin from the Church. A council od princes met in worms trying toget martin back into the church again and again the church wanted martin to take back his critizms but he again refused He was condemned as a heretic and outlaw, and
was hidden by a friend ina castle but made himself useful and translated te new
testament into German sothat most people could read the bible. The 95 Theses as well as the Indulgence Controversy: Written in 1517 byMartin LutherIt was written as a protest against the selling of indulgences.
Three points: Selling indulgences to finance the building of St. Peter's is wrong. The pope has no power over Purgatory. Buying indulgences gives people a false sense ofsecurity and endangers their salvation.
The Diet of Worms: The Diet of Worms 1521 took place in
Worms, Germany which Luther was to appear before the imperial diet of the Holy
Roman Empire. The emperor Charles V sought to change Luther’s ideas.
